MarkBook section 7-10

Collecting Assessment Data with MarkBook CNX

If you have a Palm® OS or Pocket PC handheld computer with MarkBook CNX installed, and MarkBook on your PC, you will be able to collect assessment data on the handheld and then merge all accumulated assessment data electronically into the appropriate MarkBook class folder on your PC. MarkBook CNX creates a unique file for each assessed item.

Install MarkBook CNX onto your handheld as described in section 1-4. Move your classes and attendance codes onto your handheld as described in section 2-3. This section describes recording assessment data on your handheld.

Entering Assessments on a PDA Handheld

MarkBook CNX's Assessment List Screen
Tap the MarkBook icon on your PDA handheld. Touch Start. Touch a class and then touch the  Assessments button. You will get this handheld screen.  Tap once on any assessment item on this screen to display the entered data. You may also edit the existing data for this entry. Touch the New Assessment button at the lower right of this screen to create a new entry. Touch Back to return to the list of students for this class. Or touch Archive to review all assessments entered on the PC. All assessments move from the PC to the handheld during any synchronization.

MarkBook CNX's New Entry Heading Screen One touch on the New Assessment button opens the handheld screen to the left. Use the stylus or the handheld's screen keyboard to type the Title of the new entry. Tap inside the date cell to select a month and day. Today's date comes is the default if your handheld's clock is set properly.

Touch either Type: cell. Number is for any numeric entry. If selected, a blank space will appear beside Number for the Out Of or base mark. Type in that base mark. Grade/Level is for ABCD grades OR Levels like R, 1-, 1 ... 4+. Letter grades are supplied by MarkBook CNX as a default. If you have defined levels in MarkBook's Setup on the PC, these will synchronize onto the handheld. Cancel will remove this assessment heading from the handheld. Tap Continue to move to the next screen.

Entering Marks

Tap the cell to the right of the student name. Enter the grade as per the next image. Click OK. The mark entered will appear in the selected cell on the screen to the right and a percentage will appear in the second column. Continue to enter data by tapping the cells. Data may be entered in any student order.

Entering Marks

Enter the grade in the Mark cell. Tap any numbers in the right column to enter. Tap the .5 after an integer. NM is NoMark. Select an optional Remark from the pop-down menu. CLR clears the entered grade. If checked, Check Maximum will warn you if a number greater than the base mark is entered.

To save time, use the black up/down arrows to scroll from student to student. You'll return to the previous screen only when you click OK.

Entering Marks

After entering data, tap the Analysis button to get this bar graph. If the analysis shows a problem, and you'd like to delete the entry entirely, tap Done and then Delete. For display purposes only, the screen assumes that any mark below 50% is a failure. This doesn't affect the data.

When finished entering assessment data, touch the Done button. You will be asked if you wish to save this data. Click Yes or No.

All assessments accumulated on the handheld computer will be transferred to the PC on the next synchronization. The process for your handheld is described in the digital manual supplied on the MarkBook CNX installation CD.
