MarkBook's Backup Routine

MarkBook has a built-in Backup routine to make another copy of your data, one class at a time. Always keep at least one backup copy of your current data. A diskette or a USB Mass Storage device will hold all of your current MarkBook class folders. Use Backup to move data between computers on a portable storage drive.

Accessing the Backup Routine from the Main Operating Screen

From the Main Operating Screen, section 3-1, click on the Backup button at the lower left. Or, click File in the upper menu bar to get this drop-down menu. Click on Backup. Or, scroll down to Backup with your cursor keys and push Enter on your keyboard. The Backup screen will appear for making a backup copy of the current class - 7X in this example.

If you plan to save to a diskette or a mass storage device, insert that device into your computer. The device may have an earlier backup of the same classes on it. As in the next image, the Backup screen will show you where the current data is stored in the upper Source Path window. In the example, the class folder is on the c: drive in the mkbk200X\sample0X directory.

Choose the Destination where you would like the copy to be stored (click on the down toggle and then on your choice of drive). If your existing data is on your hard drive (Drive c:) or network drive, then you can make a copy to any other available drive (e.g. a:, b:, d:, e: etc.), or to another file or location on your hard drive, or to another drive through the network. In the example, the user has selected the e: drive as the backup location. If the receiving drive already has MarkBook class folders, these will show in the Folder window (note the 5 class folders already on the device in this example).

Specifying the Drive Location for Full Class Backup

Once the copy location is specified, click Make Backup at the lower left. If the backup location already contains an earlier copy of this class folder, an A Folder Exists for ... warning will appear about updating the existing file. If this a newer file with more up-to-date data, click Yes and your computer will update the older class file with this current/newer one. If you have made modifications to one or more comments banks, select the check off option to copy these as well during your backup. As the backup proceeds, a progress window will appear for a few seconds at the bottom of this screen.

Once you have a copy of each class on a portable storage device such as the USB mass storage device in the next image, transport your data from one computer to another as convenient. Open the class from the portable device drive on the next computer and back up the class folder to the hard drive. In this case, the Source Path will be e: and the destination will be c:MkBk200X. Teachers should install MarkBook on personal/home PCs as well as the computers at work. Refresh each computer with the most recent data as you see fit. Your MarkBook license permits you to put MarkBook on all of the computers that you use personally. However, you are the only one allowed to use the software unless your school has purchased a department, site, or district license.

For other ways to manage/copy your class file folders using Windows tools, see section 12-1.
