MarkBook® section 8-1
Class Report: Grade Summary & Attendance Analysis

Reach this screen from the main operating screen, section 3-1 by clicking the Class Report button. This screen provides an immediate summary report for all items entered: grades, attendance, etc. Look at your weightings, section 7-6, and adjust if necessary before printing any of these class reports.

On this sample screen is a Summary Class Report for a fictitious English class. Average and median are in the upper right. Note that this teacher is using Levels instead of ABC grades. Also note that the Round Off button near the bottom is checked so that the summary data displays to the nearest integer.

Class Report Screen

Alter the displayed names from Real Name to Code Name to Student Number by selecting one of the options in the Use: menu at the lower left. You may also place students in ranked order by clicking in the Alpha Order cell. If rank is not selected, the students are listed in alpha order by real or code names, and in numeric order if student numbers are used.

The Attendance summary and Age calculations display. For attendance, a user may define Tardy or Late under MarkBook's Setup. Ages will calculate to today's date provided that student birth dates were entered in the edit names screen, section 4-2, AND you have today's date set properly in your computer. n/a indicates a missing birth date. The age calculation is in years (y) and months (m) to a tenth of a month. The calculated average age at the top of the column includes only those students with birth dates entered.

To restrict this display to a particular Unit and/or Category, select these using the toggles at the top left. Note: if you have created some other "Block Title" other than "Unit" (e.g. Term, Quarter, Semester, etc.) under setup, then this menu will have that new title instead of "Unit".

THE CLASS REPORT TABS:
Display all assessments in a spread sheet style format as in section 8-3 by clicking on the Entries tab at the top. You can alter any mark/grade from this grid screen as well.

Analyze the class data by clicking on the Categories tab. This will display a new screen as shown in section 8-4 showing student achievement broken down into the categories that you have selected.

View a bar graph distribution of your students' grades by clicking on the Distribution tab. This will move to a screen as shown in section 8-5.

Display levels or modal performance by selecting the Modal Analysis tab. See section 8-9 for a discussion and examples of modal or "most consistent" analysis.

Display the marks on a seating plan grid (provided a seating plan has been previously built) by selecting the Seating Plan tab.

Generate an HTML Class Report using that tab. This option enables a teacher to quickly generate a code name report complete with anecdotal notes. Use this tool to put lessons, homework, and student achievement on the Internet. See section 8-10.

Print four different kinds of class reports using the Print button. To see a sample printout of a code-name class report for posting in the classroom, go to section 8-7.

Access the weighting functions, section 7-6, directly from this screen by clicking on the Weight button at the lower right. The Weight button accesses one of the most powerful features of this software - the ability to adjust the importance of any assessment and any category/strand towards the overall mark or grade. Similarly, access the Anecdotal Notes functions, as in section 3-3 by clicking on the Notes button. Back will return to the previous screen.

Tip: for good feedback, print one-page Code Name class reports periodically. Post these reports in your classroom.

MISSING
ASSESSMENT ENTRIES - ZEROS! and NOMARKS

Class Report - Missing Assessments Analysis

Analyze achievement deficiencies by clicking on selected numbers in the NoMark and Zero! columns. In the example displayed, fictitious student Jean Jacket has not handed in 5 of 42 assessments items to date. These have been counted as zeros. A mouse click on 5 in the Zero! of 42 column (highlighted cell) produces a moveable blue-background display box listing those 5 incomplete items and the current mark/grade (64%). Similarly, a click on any number in the NoMark of 42 column will reveal a list of entries that do not count for that student. If you highlight any listed assessment in this window, and click on the Update button, the Update Screen, section 7-5, will open to permit an edit of the mark/grade for that item. Close removes this analysis window.

ATTENDANCE PATTERN ANALYSIS

Attendance Analysis Window

Analyze attendance by clicking on any number in the YTD Absent (Year-To-Date absent) column or in the YTD Late/YTD Tardy column. As an example, a mouse click on 9 (highlighted cell in the sample) triggers the attendance analysis box. The display box appears with all absences listed and a count of each day of the week. The most frequently missed day of the week is highlighted in red once there are three or more absences that week day. In the example, fictitious student Roger Houston has an attendance pattern with Mondays being most poorly attended. Monday is highlighted in red since it has the worst attendance with 6 instances. Once such a pattern is identified, bring it to the attention of parents, administrators, or others who can/should deal effectively with it. Lates/Tardies can be analyzed by clicking on the Late/Tardy cell in the yellow window or clicking on a number in the YTD Late/YTD Tardy column. Update moves to the attendance entry screens. Close removes this analysis window.

MarkBook will print individual and whole-class attendance reports. See samples in section 6-5.

Return to your previous screen, by clicking on the Back button (lower right of the screen - not shown in this image).

Manual: go to section 8-2 to see how to produce a Combined Report.
