MarkBook® section 7-3
Entry Classification - Multiple Sections

Reach this screen by clicking on the New Entry button in the lower half of the main operating screen, section 3-1. Use this screen to set up any new assessment into sections prior to the addition of marks/grades to each student's record. Please note that all sections must go into the same category. If you need multi-category entry, see the previous section, section 7-2.

On this sample screen is a fictitious science class. This class has completed twenty-eight assessments so far and the teacher is examining the results of Entry #23 - Work/Energy Test. The teacher has subdivided the test into six separate items including a Bonus section. MarkBook has the capability of dividing any assessment into section components and treating any of these as a bonus.

Entering Multi-Part Assessment Data

When creating a multi-section entry, click on the New Entry button on the main screen. As in the previous manual section, section 7-2, fill in the details about the new assessment before entering student results. Start with the Title, Date, Unit, and Category.

Divide into sections using the Number of Sections button at the center right of this screen. If you type or click an integer greater than 1, Description lines will appear to subdivide the assessment entry into its component parts. As you type each line, the sum of the sections will automatically appear in the Out Of window. Note in this example that the sum of the non-bonus parts is 82 and that this number has appeared in the Weight and Out Of boxes. Also note the treatment for the Bonus marks. By checking the appropriate rectangle in the Bonus column at the far right, the bonus mark does NOT appear in the total! If unchecked in this example, the Out Of would become 87.

In addition to handling bonus items, this Section capability is particularly handy for dividing up large assessments such as unit/division tests, projects, and exams. For instance, keeping separate records for multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, and essay sections of a test or examination may prove useful when analyzing a student's capabilities as described in section 7-7. Remediation candidates may be selected on the basis of low sectional performances.

When the description details are complete, click on Next or Save in the lower right. You will be passed on to the Mark Entry screen, section 7-4, to enter individuals' marks/grades for this item. If no mark is entered for any student, or you click Cancel, the information on this Entry screen will NOT be saved. That is, MarkBook will drop this entry from its records. Entering one mark in one section on the mark entry screen will cause the information on this screen to be saved as assessment #23 in this example. See section 7-2 for details on maintaining the sequence of entries.

Manual: go to section 7-4 to see how to input student marks/grades for an assessment.
