MarkBook® 2005 section 1-1
Installing MarkBook on your Computer(s)
Installation Issues

Insert
the CD into the CDROM drive and it will auto-boot to give this screen.
Click the Install MarkBook
button to get to the next image.
The Documentation button enables a
user to install support files. The Tutorials button links to the tutorial
section of the Asylum Software web site. The Utilities button enables a user to install sample classes and
FinePrint.

For site licensees, we strongly
recommend using the Network installation. Use the Standard installation
for W'99, ME, 2000 and XP computers not connected to the network. This includes home
and notebook computers. The VGA installation is for W'95, NT or any machine with
a 640X480 (VGA) screen resolution.
NETWORK INSTALLATION
The vast majority of MarkBook clients use the network
installation at school. There
are two files installed
with
the network version that are NOT included in the
Standard installation: MarkBook Config.PDF and MkBk05_CFG.EXE.
The
technician or person in charge should read the .PDF file and then use the .EXE
file to pre-set the school’s and MarkBook’s numerous custom options. The
calculation method, the levels scheme, the location and field matches for
importing classes, and a host of other items can be pre-set for the whole staff.
CAUTION:
select the drive and path carefully. Students must not be
able to access MarkBook. The path name to MarkBook’s execute file must not contain directory names longer
than 8 characters or a total path length greater than 120 characters. For instance,
W:/admin/4teachers/MkBk2004.exe is NOT acceptable since ‘4teachers’ is longer
than 8 characters.
STANDARD
INSTALLATION ON A
SINGLE COMPUTER
During
installation, you'll be prompted to select a location
on
the
computer.
The default is c:MkBk2005. Use Browse to alter the location if you wish
to do so. If you specify another location, you will eventually have to install
the samples folder in this same location - see section 1-2 for details.
We recommend that you select Finish to complete
the MarkBook setup but you could elect to launch (start) MarkBook at the end of
the installation process. We recommend that you create a shortcut icon to save
a few steps in launching MarkBook each time you use it.
Use Windows Explorer or your Start/Programs/MarkBook
2005
menu to locate the
MarkBook 2005
execute icon.
Put your mouse over the icon and right click
the mouse. Select the "Create Shortcut" option. Your computer
will make a second icon in the MarkBook 2005
group with a (2). Use the mouse to drag and drop the second icon onto your desktop screen. Put your mouse over the new icon and right click. Select the option to re-name it.
Edit to "MarkBook 2005" and push Enter on your keyboard. From this point
forward, double click this desktop icon to launch MarkBook. See section 1-2 to open MarkBook's sample classes.
TROUBLE-SHOOTING
INSTALLATION DIFFICULTIES
A. ‘MarkBook Has Expired’ Message
The most frequent problem users
encounter is their clock/calendar
settings. These must be set properly to today's date for MarkBook to work
properly. To check and correct your settings, click on Start on your
desktop screen, select Settings, click on Control Panel, click on Date/Time,
and then edit the date and time. We recommend that the user select d/m/yy in
their Short Date format settings. Otherwise, some of MarkBook's calendar
settings for attendance may not appear properly. Click Apply once the date
and/or time has been re-set and then exit the Control Panel.
B. '16 bit Windows Subsystem' Error
Although
MarkBook is not a 16-bit application, this error
may appear at the beginning of the installation on an XP computer:
The issue is a missing or faulty 2Kb file in the
Windows/System32 directory called AUTOEXEC.NT. Replace this file from
another XP computer. Or Email a request for the file as at the bottom of this
page. Then install MarkBook. Microsoft describes this problem on its web site
at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767
C.
800 X 600 Screen Issues: Resolution/Size
This message will
come up if the user has a 640 X 480 screen resolution OR the user has an 800 X
600 resolution but has specified Large Fonts and/or a Custom Font. To re-set
or check a screen resolution,
click Start, select Settings, select Control Panel, select Display,
and select the Settings tab to get the following image from Windows '95. If the resolution
can be changed on the computer, there will be a horizontal slider in the Desktop area
box. If the screen resolution cannot be set
larger than 640 X 480, install the VGA version of MarkBook. If the screen
resolution can be increased, grab and
move the slider it
to the right to get 800 X 600 pixels or higher. Click Apply. Follow the
prompts to keep that setting. Note the setting for Font size. If 'Large Fonts'
is
selected, the monitor's screen will NOT have a true 800 X 600 resolution and
MarkBook will give the warning above. Select the 'Small
Fonts' instead. Click Apply and save the setting. Now the error message
above will no longer appear when launching MarkBook on an 800 X 600 screen.

Note that there is
a Custom button in the Font size box above. An altered/custom font
size will cause problems on an 800 X 600 screen. If it's set to anything greater than 100%, the actual screen size will
be less than
800 X 600, and MarkBook will not launch properly. If it's set less than 100%, MarkBook will
launch but it will be re-sized in a manner that makes many of the
controls illegible and unacceptable as per the image at the left. To fix this, click the Custom
button to get the Custom Font Size screen as per the next image. Select
100%. Click OK and follow the prompts to retain this setting.
D: Task Bar Interference
On some computers
with 800 X 600 screens, the Task Bar interferes with
the lower part of the MarkBook screen. In this case, put the mouse
over any blank portion of the task bar, right click the mouse once, select Properties, and check
Auto-Hide. Click Apply and OK to leave the
dialogue box.
Now, the task bar slides down and disappears. To pop it up again, slide the mouse down
to the bottom of the screen.
E.
MarkBook Crashes When Comments Or Notes Are Selected
The path to the execute file contains a directory name longer than 8
characters or the whole path name is longer than 120 characters. Edit the path
names and/or length.
If you are unable to install MarkBook, please Email us at mail@markbook.com with details about what happened. That is, what error messages did you get?
