MarkBook® section 2-1
Opening Screen - "Open a Class"

This is the screen that will appear each time you OPEN (launch or start) MarkBook. All data for each class is stored in a Folder. This "OPEN a CLASS" screen enables you to locate and retrieve (i.e. open) each existing class folder with its stored data.

Opening a Class Screen

Once your first class is created, each time you open MarkBook you will get this screen. Click on the up/down toggles beside School Year to change the academic year if necessary. Most computers will select the current year if the internal clock is set accurately. CAUTION: If you do not select the correct School Year, MarkBook will not find your classes. In the northern hemisphere, the starting year for each class is indicated by the last two digits of the folder name - 03 for 2003/2004, 04 for 2004/2005, 05 for 2005/2006, etc. MarkBook CY users (mostly in the southern hemisphere) should pick the calendar year of use - 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, etc.

The computer hunts for and displays the file names of each saved class in the white Folders window. In this example screen, there are several classes in the c:MkBk200X directory. If you wish, set this search location as your default so that the software automatically hunts this directory location each time MarkBook is launched. Click on the Save As Default Path to set this location as the default. Or set the default to your personal space on the school's network.

To change the search location, click on the "Drive" toggle. For most users, the other drive will be "a:" indicating the diskette drive. You can set this as the default too. This will be useful if there are many teachers using the same computer and each one keeps their class folders on a separate diskette. You may also store data in a personal space on the network drive. Note: Always back up your data! See section 3-2 and section 12-1 for details.

To select a class, use your mouse to click once on the class of your choice in the Folder window, OR use your up and down keyboard arrows to scroll through the class folders. If you double click on a class folder, you will get an 'MB Folder Error' as pictured in section 1-2. Correct by double clicking on the c:/MkBk2003 directory and then single click on the class. Once the appropriate academic year is selected, the chosen class will appear in the "Select a Class:" window near the top. In this example, the "BIO3DO-02" class has been selected (note: MB and 04 were selected by MarkBook when the class folder was created for the 04/05 academic year). To open the selected class, click on the Open button on your screen. This will take you to the main operating screen, section 3-1 with the selected class data loaded.

To start a new class, click the New Class button. Follow the instructions in section 1-3.

Select the Help file by clicking on the Help button, or by selecting F1 on your keyboard. MarkBook's context-sensitive Help file is available from any screen by clicking F1.

Exit MarkBook by clicking the Exit button.

Manual: Go to section 2-2 to see how to edit class headings and categories.
