MarkBook® section 10-3
Comment Selection Screen - The Short Version

Get to the comments screen from the Student Report Screen, section 9-1 by clicking on Comments. Or, select Comments from the main operating screen, section 3-1, by clicking on Comments in the upper menu bar and selecting Normal Mode.

This is MarkBook's "comment building" screen for one student in a class. Build an anecdotal report quickly and accurately using this screen. Note the achievement and attendance summaries for the selected student box at the upper right. Also note the calculation method used - Avg-CatWt. The teacher's bank of available comments appears in the large box at the lower left. The "target location" or "editor" for each student's assembled comment is the blank white box at the upper left.

Stsrting a Comment Using a Bank

Select each student in turn by using either of the toggles beside the name at the upper right. The current student's name is in the window. The down toggle will pop down a class list menu and you can click another name. Or, use the up/down toggle to cruise through the class list in alpha order.

Once selected, each student's performance data will appear. The number of forgiven entries will appear in the NMk box. Zeros will appear in the Z! box. A mini trend graph appears. Absences, if recorded, will appear in the Abs box. Click the number to get an on-screen attendance report. The two buttons above the graph will create a graph for All assessments as in this screen example, or for one category when that category is clicked in the chart above the mini graph.

The open comment bank appears in the large box at the lower left. In the above example screen, the teacher has opened comment.bnk as in section 10-1. The 1295 comments currently in this bank are classified and displayed using a Type and a Level. Add, modify, or delete these comments using the comment bank editor as described in section 10-4. This teacher has used the Type and Level menus to the right of the comments to display the ENG subset of the bank and further subdivided the hundreds of English comments to display just the ones for Strength Level 3.

There are four ways to build a comment paragraph in the student's comment box at the upper left. Once in this box, MarkBook will store the assembled comment paragraph as a text file for this student when you exit this screen. To find a comment with a particular word, type that word in the With cell, push Enter on your keyboard, and all available comments with that word will appear in the window. The Type and level classifiers will still restrict the selection - it may be best to set these at ALL. See section 10-4 for more details on classifying comments.

Click on the Fits? button to determine if the constructed comment will fit in the target space of an electronic report. This fit value can be edited. The comment turns red if it exceeds the current fit value. More details are in section 10-4 on Fit values and editing these.

Click on Scan to display a list of students in this class who are without comments or who have comments that are too large for the available space on the printed report. If a student's assembled comment is too large, edit to reduce the size.

Clearing existing comments If there are comments already stored for the class and you wish to delete these prior to building new ones, click on File and select Clear All Comments in [........ Set]. Alternatively, build a new set of comments so that prior ones are retained for comparison purposes. Build up to ten sets of comments per Mark Set. See section 10-7 for details on building sets of comments.

Click on the Clear button to remove this student's comment from the window. Or, block the comment with your mouse and click the Delete key on your keyboard.

Click on Save and Exit in the upper menu bar to return to the prior screen.

Manual: Go to section 10-4 to edit set up comment parameters.
